What to Look for In A Corded Leaf Blower

When you’re shopping for a corded leaf blower, there are some features and specifications to pay attention to when comparing models. So, let me share these main points as part of my buyers’ guide:

Corded Vs Cordless Leaf Blower

Corded and cordless leaf blowers are comparable to each other in many ways. But they each have strengths and weaknesses. First up let’s take a look at cordless models.

Advantages of Cordless Leaf Blowers

The principal advantage of a cordless leaf blower is maneuverability. These machines are not tethered to a power socket, so you can wander around freely without restrictions.

Electric-powered cordless leaf blowers use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries as their power source. On the downside, you will be carrying the extra weight of the battery and be limited to the battery run-time.

Whilst gas-powered leaf blowers are also cordless, but they run on gasoline and tend to be loud, dirty, and require more engine maintenance and servicing.

Advantages of Corded Leaf Blowers

  • Lightweight
  • Lower Purchase Price
  • Infinite Run-Time
  • Power

Corded Electric Leaf Blowers are the lightest technology available, with no heavy lithium battery or cast metal engine block, there is a significant weight saving to be found.

Mains-powered motors are also easier to design and manufacture and do not need the added cost of a lithium battery and charger pack. So, corded blowers offer a sleeker design which will, in turn, be reflected in price saving up to 30% of the price on a like-for-like basis.

With a corded model, you have a limitless supply of main electricity offering infinite run time and zero downtime if your battery runs dry and needs to recharge for an hour or more.

Finally, mains power models tend to have more power than battery-powered models. There is no doubt gas leaf blowers are better suited to commercial use and offer ultimate power, but next in line is the corded model. With a good balance of power for domestic home use.

Are Corded Leaf Blowers Worth the Money?

That answer depends on how you will be using it. If you need a leaf blower that is reliable and relatively free of maintenance requirements, corded leaf blowers are perfect.

But they are best used close to your home. Their limitation is their need for an electric cord. So, in my experience, the farther away from a power source you work, the more limited the corded models become.

However, if you put a little forethought into it and plan most of the limitations can be eliminated…within reason. Buy a long power cord, that is retractable or on a reel will save tangles. It will also allow you to reach deep into your yard to clear any leaves at the bottom of the garden or driveway.

Corded Leaf Blower Buyers Guide

Let’s look at some of the features and specifications used to compare different models of corded leaf blowers. Understanding some standard terms will help unlock the mysteries of leaf blower terminology.

Motor Power

Corded Electric Leaf Blower run of a constant current from your mains power supply, so the typical measurement of a machine’s power in performance is the blower motor amperage. The higher the Amps typically correlates to the power output in AirSpeed or Air Volume of the Leaf Blower.

In other words, a 15 Amp leaf blower will deliver roughly twice the performance of a 7 Amp machine. There are lots of variables that affect the actual performance of a leaf blower, but this serves to illustrate the importance of motor power in delivering leaf blower power.

Air Speed MPH

Airspeed is the measure of how fast a blower can push air. This speed translates to about how many miles air travels if the blower speed is set to a constant for one hour. So, the faster the air moves, the higher the speed.

Air Volume CFM

The air volume of a leaf blower is measured in cubic feet per minute. We care about the volume of air a blower can move because that air movement is what will displace debris, like leaves. It is through a combination of airspeed and air volume that a high-quality leaf blower performs its work.

So, a fast airspeed is one thing, but the cubic volume of air is the true reflection of the machine’s power.

Leaf Blower Weight

The weight of a leaf blower is important to any user. If you’re on the smaller side, it can be very tiring operating a heavy leaf blower, especially for long periods of time. Even for bigger guys like me, a long day of blowing leaves can leave my shoulders sore from carting around the weight of my machine.

So, it’s a pretty important factor to consider, especially if you will be using your blower at odd angles or on a ladder to clean your gutters.

Some models can offer an integrated strap system to relieve some of the burdens of carrying bulky equipment. Or you could even check out a backpack leaf blower if mobility and comfort are your main priority.

Leaf Blower Vs Leaf Vacuum Bagger

Some leaf blowers convert into a leaf vacuum mulcher, with a bagger attachment. This allows you to not only blow leaves out of the living areas around your house but to suck them, mulch them and collect them into a bag for carting further away.

This added feature can be very handy if you have a fenced yard where it is difficult to remove the leaves with blowing alone. If you have a yard with an open perimeter where you can just blow them in the woods, it might not be that important of a feature for you.

Speed Settings

Variable speed settings can be an important feature for the more powerful leaf blowers on this list. If you have a very powerful machine with no way of reducing or controlling the airflow, it can lead to uncontrollable swirls of leaves that never really find a suitable resting place.

Best Corded Leaf Blower Reviews

I searched far and wide to find the best corded electric leaf blowers available for general domestic use. My priority was to find the best overall performing leaf blower, based on performance (CFM), build quality, and value for money.

As well as my own testing and that of colleagues’ previous experience of using these products, we also take into account customer reviews across the major online retailers and growing forums showing the level of customer satisfaction these specific products have delivered.

  • CFM: 409
  • MPH: 145
  • Number of Speed Settings: Variable by trigger squeeze
  • Weight (lbs): 9.8
  • Extra Features: Multiple nozzles, trigger lock, cord retainer

The DEWALT 12-Amp Corded Leaf Blower is powerful and very high quality. It has a number of features that make it stand out from the crowd:

A trigger lock means you don’t have to squeeze the trigger constantly, just set the lock and apply consistent blowing power without the need to cramp your hand.

This corded leaf blower from DeWalt also features multiple nozzle attachments. The narrower the tube on the nozzle, the more concentrated and forceful it will blow. By narrowing the tube, the force ramps up.

This model also features a clip that helps to hold the tail of its electrical plug to your extension cord, so they don’t become separated as easily as on some other models.

This is a premium corded leaf blower, and it has a premium price tag too. But this was a very well-constructed power tool that had a really good array of nozzles making it suitable for several applications.

  • CFM: 607
  • MPH: 137
  • Number of Speed Settings: 5
  • Weight (lbs): 6.6
  • Extra Features: Included shoulder strap, cord retainer, auxiliary handle, 10-foot-long power cord tail

The Enertwist 15-Amp Corded Electric Leaf Blower has a powerful motor that generates a very high CFM. Users control the speed by selecting the desired setting with their thumb while still holding the blower in just one hand.

It is very lightweight, and the tapered nozzle makes it easy to apply the power to your blowing accurately.  It also includes a shoulder strap to help you carry the device, an integrated cord keeper, and an auxiliary handle to help you control and balance the blower for all applications.

This model also has a very long power cord tail, so the weight of the extension cord lays on the floor, not at arm height. That makes it even less likely to detach accidentally and makes the blower seem even lighter.

It is also very affordable, and you get a lot of power without having to shell out too much of your hard-earned cash.

3. BLACK+DECKER 12-Amp 3-In-1 Electric Leaf Blower

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B00FREQC10&Format= SL300 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=theyardandgar 20&language=en US

  • Motor Power: 12 Amps
  • CFM: 400
  • MPH: 250
  • Number of Speed Settings: 2
  • Weight (lbs): 8.1
  • Extra Features: 3-in-1 design with blower, vacuum, and mulcher, cord retainer

The BLACK+DECKER 12-Amp 3 in 1 Electric Leaf Blower can handle more than one job around your home. It can easily transition from a leaf blower to a vacuum and a mulcher.

It is pretty powerful, and on the lower speed setting, there is a bit of variability depending on how hard you squeeze the trigger. Once you’ve selected the higher speed, it stays there. Since this tool is a jack-of-all-trades, it suffers a bit from not being able to perform all of its functions quite as well as a dedicated tool.

For example, the bagging system on the model I had wanted to come slightly loose, and that could mean that your hard work gathering leaves will end up with a pile of leaves at your feet. Also, on the highest speed setting, I ended up sucking up some of the gravel off my driveway instead of just the leaves.

But it has a whole set of optional attachment upgrades you can buy separately, and it can do three jobs for the price of one machine. So, that might make it a top choice for you if there are multiple jobs to do and you only have space for one machine in the shed or your garage.

4. Toro 7 Amp Power Sweep Electric Leaf Blower

Toro 7 Amp Power Sweep Electric Leaf Blower

  • Motor Power: 7 Amps
  • CFM: N/A
  • MPH: 160
  • Number of Speed Settings: 2
  • Weight (lbs): 4.7
  • Extra Features: None

The Toro 7 Amp Power Sweep Electric Corded Leaf Blower is extremely lightweight and supremely affordable. It is probably not going to be a good choice for hardcore yard work or big jobs.

But, it is plenty powerful to handle smaller jobs like cleaning patios, decks, short driveways, and pathways of leaves and other debris.

Since it’s so light, it’s also very easy for almost any user to handle. This was the preferred model for my wife, who is quite petite, so it was perfect for her smaller frame. Easy to handle, and comfortable to use over a reasonable period of time.

But she also spends a lot of time cleaning out our garden beds and maintaining our front walkway, and this model is perfect for running long periods and frees her from having to deal with gasoline, which she hates the smell of.

She even used this blower last winter to quickly blow away light snowfalls from the car windshield without having to get out a shovel or scrapper…smart lady my wife!

5. Greenworks 7 Amp Single Speed Electric Blower

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B0030BG1CC&Format= SL400 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=theyardandgar 20&language=en US

  • Motor Power:  7 Amps
  • CFM: 150
  • MPH: 160
  • Number of Speed Settings: 1
  • Weight (lbs): 4.7
  • Extra Features: Greenworks 4-year manufacturer guarantee, two-piece blower tube

The Greenworks 7 Amp Single Speed Electric Blower is similar in power and weight to the Toro model. However, this offering from Greenworks only has a one-speed setting, so I struggled to use it in two main ways:

First, there would be too much blowback in corners as I couldn’t dial down the speed. And, I had a similar issue in garden beds, where the lack of adjustable speeds meant that the leaf blower blew away my mulch chips as well the leaves I intended to remove. It was a bit frustrating.

This model also seems prone to becoming disconnected from the extension cord since it lacks a clip to retain the connection. But it’s very affordable, and Greenworks has a good reputation when it comes to their manufacturer guarantee.

6. Greenworks 9 Amp Jet Electric Leaf Blower

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B01MY8TTNT&Format= SL400 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=theyardandgar 20&language=en US

  • CFM: 550
  • MPH: 130
  • Number of Speed Settings: variable
  • Weight (lbs): 5.6
  • Extra Features: Greenworks 4-year manufacturer guarantee, cord retainer, shoulder strap

The Greenworks 9 Amp Jet Electric Leaf Blower is a step up from the junior model with seven amps. But it is still quite affordable, and you get a lot of bang for your buck.

You’ll only apply the power you need for each particular job because, with its variable speed trigger, you can dial in the speed you need effortlessly. It is also lightweight, and with the included strap, you can handle almost any job a small yard will throw at you.

And, since it’s a Greenworks product, it’s backed by a reputable 4-year guarantee from the manufacturer.

7. WORX 7.5 Amp 2-Speed Electric Leaf Blower

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B00V8KSDDM&Format= SL400 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=theyardandgar 20&language=en US

  • Motor Power: 7.5 Amps
  • CFM: 130
  • MPH: 160
  • Number of Speed Settings: 2
  • Weight (lbs): 4.4
  • Extra Features: Cord retainer, two-piece tube

The WORX 7.5 Amp 2-Speed Electric Leaf Blower is lightweight and compact. It is a little bit weak in the power department. But it makes up for that a bit with the choice of two speeds for different applications and a simple two-piece tube that allows you to concentrate blowing power when you need it.

The tubes are impossible to connect improperly. They only work in one direction. And they fit together quite well. For a small blower, this machine can handle bigger jobs than I thought it could. It’s also quite affordable, so you don’t have to break the bank to get a quality machine.

  • Lacks the power needed to be an all-purpose leaf blower

How to Use an Electric Leaf Blower

Using an electric leaf blower isn’t much different than using a gas-powered leaf blower. You should always keep in mind that a leaf blower directs a powerful current of air when it’s running.

That means that it is relatively easy to disturb sensitive surfaces like mulch beds, flowers, and gardens. It is also very easy to accidentally launch small pebbles or other debris with an errant gust or an overpowering blast of air. So always be very careful when aiming and activating your leaf blower and use the power judiciously.

It’s also a good practice to sweep the nozzle constantly. Allowing it to linger in one direction for too long is bound to damage things, even grass and other relatively resilient plant life.

Reserve your highest power settings for open fields, and trim back the power when you’re blowing off hard surfaces.

Leaf Blower Maintenance

Corded electric leaf blowers need little to no maintenance. Some models require periodic refreshing of some internal components. But that’s not typical. You may also have to change or clean an air filter on some models.

Your owner’s manual will explain all of the maintenance requirements in detail. But, as a rule, electric leaf blowers, and corded models, in particular, require little to no maintenance. Conversely, gas-powered leaf blowers require nearly constant care that is often quite messy.

Safety Equipment

Anytime you’re using a leaf blower, you should consider wearing eye protection. Leaf blowers excel at launching small particles of debris and leaves into the air, so it is easy to have an accident that leads to getting something in your eye.

Wearing goggles or impact-resistant safety glasses is a very smart safety practice that can help you avoid a significant injury.

In addition, even though they are typically not as loud as heavy-duty gasoline leaf blowers, corded electric leaf blowers make quite a bit of loud noise. You should consider wearing ear protection to protect yourself from potentially damaging noise levels.

It’s also probably a good idea to wear long pants and boots instead of flip-flops and shorts!

This wardrobe choice will keep your feet and lower legs safe from flying hazards, as well as any insects you might disturb with your leaf blower.

Verdict: Best Corded Electric Leaf Blowers

Choosing a winner of the title best-corded leaf blower was pretty easy for me. The DEWALT 12-Amp Corded Leaf Blower 145-MPH, 409-CFM is a little bit more expensive than some other corded leaf blowers. But it has all the power you need for jobs from small to fairly big.

Its variable speed trigger allows you to tailor your power for different applications easily. It has thoughtful features like a cord retainer to prevent detaching from the extension cord accidentally. And, it also has a trigger lock that lets you run the machine without the need to squeeze the trigger manually. This means you can keep working longer without resting your hand.

This machine has the power and features that show its design is up for the rigors of heavy-duty applications. Even though some huge jobs might be slightly out of its range, this corded leaf blower is the best of its class.

I have a few gas-powered leaf blowers that I use less and less as this Dewalt corded leaf blower continues to grow on me and meet the demands of caring for my backyard. It will never totally replace them for working out in the field far from the electrical outlet, but it handles most jobs.

And it does so without the need to pour gasoline, mix two-cycle oil, or adjust a carburetor.
