Your electric start mower should last for the longest time possible, but not all mowers have the build quality, or capabilities to stand the test of time.

There’s a lot to consider, but always have the following critical factors in mind:

Lawn Size and Terrain

The first consideration should be your lawn’s size and the type of terrain. 

Generally, a small-sized battery-powered can efficiently mow up to half an acre. Anything half an acre up would benefit from a self-propelled wheel drive mower. 

Once you get past an acre and a half then a riding mower can become a sensible option.

Uneven or hilly yards require more effort to clear, requiring greater engine capacity. Whilst there is a large range of mower engines on the market, most electric start mowers range between 140cc to 190cc in engine size. 

Finally, wheel size and adjustable deck height will also need some consideration. For example, you may have Stoney areas in your yard, or maybe edging stones.

You will want to travel over these low-lying obstacles uninterrupted, and without damaging your mower blade or cutting deck. 

Electric Start Vs. Pull Start

The manual crank pull cord mower is slightly cheaper than an electric start. But it’s less convenient and definitely less reliable. The ignition section alone has more maintenance requirements. 

A self-actuated electric starter doesn’t use a starter or carburetor fluid or a primer pump; hence it’s more convenient and straightforward to get started especially in cold or damp weather. 

But when all is said and done…, the electric start mowers remove the hassle of pulling the manual crank cord.

Instead, you simply turn on the mower’s engine or motor with the flip of a switch.

Gas Powered Vs. Battery Electric Start Mowers

An electric start mower doesn’t necessarily have to run on electric power, it can also be gas-powered. Here’s how the two technologies differ:

Gas Powered

When it comes to pure power, gasoline engines have a modest advantage over electric motors. This is especially true of the larger-sized riding mowers.

However, with a push mower, the difference nowadays is negligible. 

The main advantage of today’s gasoline engines is simply the ability to refuel as you work. This means you can work all day, or as long as your fuel supply lasts.

Whereas battery-powered mowers require their battery cells to recharge, which typically means a period of downtime of a few hours. Unless you have extra batteries.

But still, two sets of batteries will last half a day at best. 

Gas machines do tend to be cheaper to purchase on a dollar-to-power ratio, meaning you will get more power per dollar you spend on gas mowers. 

Battery Powered

In my opinion, the modern battery-powered mower has a few significant advantages over a gasoline product.

They are easy to start, require zero servicing or engine maintenance and they are significantly quieter and cleaner. Meaning they do not have petrol fumes and emissions. 

In a residential setting, I would generally try to go for an electric battery-powered mower nowadays for any residential lawn up to around 2 acres. 

Hopefully, with these thoughts in mind, you may already know what’s right for you!

Engine Power (hp) Vs. Motor (V)

As I have mentioned previously electric and gas-powered mowers do have a modest power output disparity. 

However, I did want to discuss a comparison of Engine Horsepower (hp) and Motow Power Volts (V). Well…the truth is they are not directly comparable. For example, a 150cc Engine is directly not comparable to a 50V Motor.

There are so many variables in how the motor power is used that affect how it translates into actual operating power output. 

For the purposes of buying a lawnmower, my experience has shown anything on the list of more than powerful enough to get the job done effectively.

For example, a 20V motor can be an excellent tool for lighter work running right through to 50V or more that will swallow up the work with ease on any residential lawn that’s reasonably well maintained. 

Put it like this if it wasn’t powerful enough, it would not be on my list of recommended products. 

So I will leave it at that, as, erm well…, I am not an engineer. However, if you do want a bit more info on it you may find this article useful

Lithium Battery Run Time (Ah)

The battery’s amp-hour (Ah) is essentially the amount of charge that can sustain a one-ampere current flow for one hour.

So if your battery reads 2 Ah, it can allow 1 Amp to flow for about two hours.

Generally, a higher Amp Hour battery reading means more runtime. If your lawn measures a quarter of an acre a, 5.0-Ah lithium batteries should be just fine.

But if you own a larger yard, go for higher or perhaps two or three battery cells. 

So the bigger your lawn and the more battery power you need to exert to get it done, you will require a higher Ah battery storage. Thick, long grass or hilly terrain will draw more battery power than well-maintained grass on flat terrain. 

2 or 3 Function: Bag, Mulch, and Discharge

Electric start mowers can mulch, collect, or discharge grass clippings onto the backyard. This isn’t just about choosing the most effortless process or one that leaves the perfect finish.

It actually affects the health of your lawn grass as well. Here’s how:

 Mulching – Mulching mowers feature specially-designed blades and cutting decks that chop clippings into tiny pieces. They nourish your lawn by returning the moisture and nutrients in the clippings to the ground. 

 Bagging – These mowers collect the clippings instead of leaving them for raking, but unless you intend to compost the clippings, the approach disposes of valuable nutrients as landfill waste. Bagging is only practical if part of your lawn has a disease. 

Discharging – Though it’s the least preferred, this approach is practical if you want to tackle an overgrown yard with excellent cut quality. 

Most lawnmowers feature one of the three options, but I prefer switching between functions over the course of a season, so I would suggest going for a 3-in-1 type mower that offers all features. 

Clippings Bag Quality

You can’t compromise on the size and quality of your clipping bag. The larger your lawn size, the larger your bag should be. While nylon meshed bags are the most common, you can choose one made from your preferred composite material.

Generally, consider your type of mower, the required capacity, and your capability preferences. Whatever you choose should serve you multiple times. 

Self-Propulsion Wheel Drive

The electric start mower is primarily convenience-oriented. So, it doesn’t make sense to start the machine effortlessly and then drain your energy pushing the mower.

The self-propelled mower drives itself forward using either rear-wheel drive, front-wheel drive, or all-wheel-drive systems. e. No pushing! It’s easier on your body, covers larger spaces faster, leaves a smoother overall cut, and simplifies cutting sloped lawns. 

However, the additional feature makes the machine heavier and more costly than a push mower. Weigh the setbacks against your mowing needs and preferred features to make the right choice. 

Drive Mechanism

  • Front-wheel-drive (FWD) – Perfect for lawns with numerous obstacles. You can easily push down the handle to reduce front-wheel traction and conveniently pivot around corners. 
  • Rear-wheel-drive (RWD) – Ideal for side-hill and uphill mowing. It works best in such backyards because the front tires can’t lose traction whenever you push down the handle while going uphill.
  • All-wheel-drive (AWD) – Explicitly made for cutting across any surface so the option on a lawnmower for hilly terrain

Wheel Size

There are two main lawnmower wheel size categories: high-wheel and low-wheel. A high-wheel mower often has 9- to 12-inch rear wheels and 8-inch front wheels.

On the other hand, the low-wheel mower has 8-inch wheels at the back and front.

Generally, a larger wheel offers better traction and smooths out bumps, relieving you from the struggle of uphill mowing. They’re also perfect for rolling over barriers or low-lying hard landscaping due to the extra height clearance.

Cutting Deck Width

The cutting deck houses the mower blades and prevents grass and debris from flying around. A wide deck can cut wider paths, so you’ll take less time mowing. 

Cutting deck widths range from 14-22 inches for push mowers right the way up to 70 inches on ride-on mowers. But for what we are looking at you need to aim for something around 20-22” wide so it’s easy to handle and covers a good cutting path for efficiency.

Remember that a smaller deck has excellent maneuverability. So choose a smaller width if your lawn has obstacles or tight spots.

Cut Height Adjustment

While most landscapers would want to keep the grass as short as possible, you have your preferred cutting height. So choose an electric start lawn mower with height adjustment. 

Typically, the best electric start mowers feature a good number of level options, with their cutting height ranging from 1.0 to 4.5 inches. More height levels mean additional flexibility to customize your cutting. 

Deck Fabrication and Material

The deck material and fabrication determine the mower’s quality and longevity. Most decks are made from composite plastics, aluminum, or steel, but they all fall within these options:

Steel Decks offer durability and strength to withstand the hustle and bustle of moving them around your yard, in and out of storage, and so on. The downside is they will bring a lot of additional weight to the mower compared to a plastic composite deck. 

Plastic Decks aren’t as robust as steel but you guessed it, they are very light. If your lawn is flat and you need the convenience of maneuverability then a plastic composite deck will be the best option for you.

Speed Controls

Self-propulsion simplifies mowing, but you don’t have to jog behind your machine or walk slowly because the mower’s speed doesn’t match yours. Generally, self-propelled grass-cutters fall in the following categories of gearless and geared speed controls:

  • Single-speed: This simple drive system has only one forward speed set at a reasonably comfortable pace for walking
  • Variable speed: The structure leverages a drive pulley system to enable varying speeds without changing gears. It’s versatile and practical for uneven inclines and terrains
  • Hydrostatic: This mechanism uses a pump motor to convert engine power into hydraulic power. It’s also fearless, and you can adjust the mower’s speed indefinitely

The variable speed and hydrostatic transmission are the most attractive options for better control and coverage.

But you can get your hands on your preferred single-speed mower at the store or dealership to determine whether you like its speed control.

I’ve used EGO’s previous 56V model, and I can confirm that the advanced Select Cut is another leap forward. 

The mower uses a 10.0Ah ARC Lithium battery that can deliver 75 minutes of run time after charging for 60 minutes. But what makes this mower stand out for me is the control and cut quality…

The Touch Drive self-propulsion is light to the touch and very smooth. Just by using the handle trigger, you can literally control this mower with one finger. 

The Select Cut function allows you to choose between three cutting blades to find the right cut quality to suit all situations. Choose from a Mulching Blade, High Lift Bagging Blade, and Extended Runtime Blade.

This multi-blade setup is a first for an electric-powered mower. 

The mower uses the rear-wheel-drive motion. Its front wheels are 4 inches in diameter, while the rear is 6 inches. So they are not the largest wheel but when combined with the cutting deck adjustment of up to 4.5 inches you can achieve good ground clearance giving you plenty of options. 

It can clock a speed range of 0.9 to 3.1 MPH while producing about 30 decibels less than a gas mower with equivalent power.

The turbo motor’s built-in cutting technology allows the mower to rev up when it encounters thick, high grass and down for thinner, shorter grass. This saves energy and increases the mower’s runtime.

On balance this mower is super easy to control and delivers an excellent cut, I’m a huge fan of what Ego is doing with their lawnmower range right now. Oh…and I should say, this mower starts with the push of a button!

If you’re wondering what Nexite is…well it’s a high-impact resistant cutting deck. Rust-free and certain to withstand rough treatment and uneven ground.

However, it does make this machine a little heavier than the Ego+. The Honda is 93lb in weight. 

The mower has 7 cutting positions ranging from 0.75”-4.0” giving you the option of a very short cut. To be completely honest in my use of this mower the 0.75” was a little too short for general use, but for some grass types, it may have a benefit.

Just not on my lawn.

Finally, the Select Drive Speed Control allows the mower to adjust to your walking speed. So overall this mower is exceptionally well built and will last a lifetime. The engine performance was very good and the quality of the cut was excellent. 

If you prefer a Gas Powered electric start mower over a battery mower then this is my personal favorite.

Suited for anyone looking for a super-convenient mowing experience. First off it is battery powered so simply pull the mower out of the garage and hit the electric start button and go. You can get around ⅓ of an acre cut with a single battery 6.0Ah charge.

When you’re done this neat mower folds up and can be stowed away in a hanging position in your garage. 

Despite its 22-inch metal deck, the machine is lightweight at 80 lbs. The mower also has a personal pace system to adjust to your speed. It also comes with the Recycler® cutting technology that returns nutrient-rich clippings to the soil and has an adjustable height range of between one to four inches with seven levels.

You’ll also like the mower’s bag-on-demand lever for switching between mulching and bagging. The Flex-Force is not as comprehensive as some mowers on my list but for simplicity and convenience, it’s hard to beat.
